gea refrigeration
For & on behalf of GEA Refrigeration
GEA Refrigeration Technologies GmbH, with headquarters in Bochum, Germany, is a developer, manufacturer, and supplier of industrial refrigeration and freezer technology. Its product portfolio includes piston compressors, screw compressors, chillers, tunnel freezers, carton and spiral freezers, industrial ice generators, valves and valve sets, driers, and exhaust ventilators.
The company primarily supplies to the industrial sectors such as food and beverage industries, the petrochemical, chemical, and pharmaceutical industries, fishing ships, natural gas liquefaction, transport activities (trucks, buses, and railways), supermarkets, leisure facilities and zoos.
We have been extremely lucky to have worked with GEA refrigeration on a number of projects. Here is a small selection of those:
Moy Park Foods, Grantham
Moy Park is the largest poultry meat producer in Northern Ireland and one of the 15 biggest food companies in the UK.
With 14 processing and manufacturing units in Northern Ireland, England, France, the Netherlands and the Republic of Ireland, the company has the capacity to process 240 million birds annually, in addition to producing around 200,000 tons of food per year.
Its product portfolio is comprised of a variety of fresh meats, ready-to-eat meals, pre-cooked meals, breaded and frozen foods, vegetarian foods and desserts, supplied to major restaurant chains and retailers in the United Kingdom and Continental Europe.
Moy Park invested £20m in its Grantham food processing site. The investment saw a new state-of-the-art convenience foods facility being built within the company’s established premises there..
Our clients GEA were awarded the contract to design, supply, install and commission the replacement bespoke energy efficient cooling systems for Moy Parks convenience food production and storage prior to its distribution.
This facility is cooled and controlled to specific temperatures by an Ammonia and Glycol systems that comprises of High Temperature and Low Temperature surge drum package units, and associated screw compressors situated within the new bespoke purpose built Plant Room.
Our scope was to supply and install bespoke thermal insulation and sheet metal cladding to plant, equipment and pipework that made up the multi-temperature refrigeration system.
- Prior to any insulation being applied all pipework was treated with an anti-corrosion barrier paint.
- Depending on the working temperature the pipework was insulated with either a single or double layer of polyisocyanurate (PIR) complete with factory applied vapour barrier, having all longitudinal and circumferential joints staggered to provide a sufficient thermal break.
- All penetrations and termination points were sealed with an elastolar sealant prior to any cladding being applied.
- All external and plantroom pipework/vessels were clad in bespoke alu-zinc sheet metal cladding, secured with machine-tensioned stainless steel bands, taking great care not to damage the insulation vapour barrier.
New Ammonia Chill Distribution Facility at NFT, Tilbury Docks
Forth Ports Limited, one the UK’s largest ports groups, undertook the construction of a £20million state-of-the art temperature-controlled distribution centre at the Port of Tilbury in partnership with NFT Distribution.
The centre is a long-term partnership investment with NFT - the UK’s market leader in chilled food distribution - to create a unique PortCentric distribution centre which will be one of the largest refrigerated (“reefer”) quayside facilities in Europe. We were pleased to be involved in the construction of this centre.
Our scope of works was as follows:
New Ammonia Chill Distribution Facility at NFT, Tilbury Docks
New Plant Room

Associated pipework and cooler connections

OSI Foods Scunthorpe
OSI Foods are a global meat-products food supplier. They are an entrepreneurial company who started out in 1909 and yet are still privately held. They deliver cost-effective, quality, value, stream-lined processes to many large customers.
The project we undertook was as follows:
New NH3 Spiral & Inpingement Freezer Project to Refrigeration Plant Room, Roof Void
